Authorities in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers worried it could be an algal bloom.
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a stretch of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A like substance has also been noted on areas of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens have been collected and sent to the regulatory body for analysis. A representative remarked that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in reaction to changes in minerals, warmth, rain or light".
"The events are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the proliferations can change the water crimson," the official said. "Only some phytoplankton events are harmful, with many species acting as a primary source of food for creatures in the marine food web."
"The primary reason of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."
Algae outbreaks are natural events but their frequency has risen in the past few years, in part due to climate change and contamination that combine to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their populations that disturbs the healthy balance of aquatic systems.
These occurrences have been likened to marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In worse situations, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as marine life is eliminated or suffocated, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.
A southern state recently grappled with a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern coastline after a string of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The outbreak caused surfers with sore eyes and hacking coughs and may have caused the death of up to numerous aquatic species across numerous types, according to official estimates.
Faith Coleman, who was involved in studying the beginning of the previous event stated, based on images of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are many of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she added.
The scientist said sea sparkle did not generate toxins similar to the type involved in that severe outbreak, but it does eat microscopic animals and "many fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or something like a fish reproduction," she added.
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, commented it seemed the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, referring to like situations elsewhere.
"So Tasmania needs to deliver a clear message here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've gathered and we need to inform the people here," she stated.
She said she had concerns for community health after feeling a prickling feeling along her body while being exposed with contaminated seawater.
An environmental foundation has documented deceased sea creatures and expired organisms washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the event as an "environmental emergency" and urging the local leader to see and "take control the reaction that government must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to realize this is a catastrophe in the making, commercially as well as environmentally."
Speaking to reporters, the premier stated he was uninformed of any connections between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was required before determinations could be made.
"It is vital to guarantee our rivers and seas are safe for nature and sustainable," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the island are our resources and we need to ensure the public and our business sector can coexist to use our seas effectively and sustainably."
