Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
