A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
